Lower Maintenance Plants

Purple ConeflowerWith the coming of the summer solstice so too will come the time we look forward to playing outdoors. With our vegetables planted we don’t want to spend all our hours tending the garden. Installing lower maintenance plants allows us the time to do other things other than gardening.
A little planning ahead of time can save many hours of labor later, time better spent paddling or riding our bikes or even passing time in the hammock with a good book.

Here is a short list of lower maintenance plants to help you get started in your design.

  • Blazing Star (Liatris Spicata) hardy zone 3, tolerant of all soil types, blooms mid- summer to late fall

  • Coneflower (Echinacea Purpurea) hardy zone 2, summer bloomer, extremely rugged plant

  • Coral bells (Heuchera) hardy zone 3, blooms late spring early summer great foliage all season, variety of colors to choose from, favor partial shade

  • Hosta hardy zone 3, blooms mid- summer, prefers partial shade, great for colorful foliage

  • Russian Sage (Perovskia Atriplicifolia) hardy zone 3, blooms summer to fall, one of the great rare blue flowers, full sun with good drainage will perform well all summer, some pruning necessary in the early spring.
